Finish guide
Pool Plaster vs Pebble: Which Finish Fits Your Pool?
Plaster is the lowest-cost durable finish at about $4 per sq ft and roughly 10 years of life; pebble costs about $10 per sq ft and lasts 20+ years (Angi). Quartz sits between them. The right choice depends on budget, how long you plan to stay, and how the surface should feel.

Plaster and quartz
Plaster and quartz
White plaster gives the bright aqua water color most people picture. It is the least expensive durable finish, but it shows chemistry mistakes first: etching, staining and mottling. Colored plaster deepens the water color but can look blotchy as it ages.
Quartz finishes add colored quartz aggregate to the plaster mix. They hold up better than plain plaster and hide minor wear, at a price between plaster and pebble.
Pebble
Pebble and polished finishes
Pebble finishes expose small natural stones in a cement matrix. They last the longest of the common finishes and hide stains well. The trade-off is texture: some swimmers find standard pebble rough on feet.
Polished finishes, sold under brand names such as Hydrazzo, are ground smooth after application for a softer feel and a terrazzo-like look. Expect them at the premium end of any quote.
Choosing
How to choose for a sunny East Bay yard
- Staying 10+ years? Pebble usually costs less per year of life than plaster.
- Selling soon? Fresh white plaster refreshes the pool at the lowest cost.
- Full sun all afternoon? Darker finishes look deeper and hold more heat; they can also fade unevenly.
- Kids and long swim sessions? Consider the feel: plaster or polished pebble over standard pebble.
- HOA rules? Some HOAs review visible color changes; check before ordering.
Ask for a finish sample board and look at it wet, in sun. Then see resurfacing and the cost guide.
Answers
Questions people ask
Is pebble better than plaster?
Pebble lasts longer (20+ years vs about 10, per Angi) and hides wear better; plaster costs less and feels smoother. Neither is better for every pool.
Can you put pebble over old plaster?
Often yes, after the old surface is prepared and a bond coat applied, if the plaster underneath is sound. Loose or delaminating plaster has to come off first.
