Resurfacing: when the finish is done

A plaster finish lasts about 10 years and an aggregate (pebble) finish 20 years or more, according to Angi's resurfacing guide. Water chemistry, sun and how the pool was started up all shorten or stretch that.

Many homes in Danville, Alamo and Blackhawk were built in the late 1970s and 1980s (median year built 1978–1988, Census ACS). A pool that came with one of those homes is often on its second or third finish, and the tile and equipment from the last round may be due at the same time.

  • Resurfacing means draining the pool. In Contra Costa County that water goes to the sanitary sewer with a permit, never the street. See draining a pool in Contra Costa.

  • Replacing waterline tile or coping is cheapest while the pool is already empty.

Before you hire

Check any pool contractor in two minutes

Pool work in California is licensed by the Contractors State License Board. The swimming pool classification is C-53 (CSLB); electrical work for new circuits usually needs a C-10 electrician.

  • Look up the license number on CSLB License Check: active status, classification, bond and workers' comp.
  • Ask for a written scope: finish brand and type, prep method, start-up plan, drain permit, tile and coping, warranty.
  • Compare at least two quotes for the same scope before paying any deposit.

FAQ

Answers

Questions people ask

How much would it cost to fix a pool?

It depends on the job. Angi puts the national average for general pool repairs at about $725, with most between $243 and $1,212+. Resurfacing runs $6,000–$15,000+, leak detection averages about $300 and pump replacement $700–$4,000+. See the cost guide.

What is the best time of year to resurface a pool?

Many owners book in fall, winter or early spring so the pool is back in service for summer. Spring calendars fill fast. Summer work is possible, but heat makes plaster harder to apply, so ask the contractor how they handle hot days.

How long does pool resurfacing last?

About 10 years for plaster and 20+ years for pebble aggregate, according to Angi. Balanced water and a careful start-up help any finish reach the long end of its range.

Is my pool leaking or just evaporating?

Run a bucket test: set a bucket of pool water on the first step, mark both water levels, and compare after 24 hours. If the pool drops more than the bucket, suspect a leak. Leak detection steps.

Do you clean pools?

No. This site covers repairs: resurfacing, leaks, equipment, tile, coping and remodels. Weekly cleaning services are a different trade.
